Keith resigned his position as accountant with a large Sydney based mining company in 1974 and purchased the Cairns branch of "The Sapphire and Opal Centre" from the Sydney owners, turning his hobby of opal & sapphire fossicking in to a career.Keith BirdKeith studied diamond grading through the prestigious "Gemmological Institute of America" qualifying in 1981 His certificate is signed by Richard T Liddecoate, acknowledged as the "Father of Gemmology" and is internationally famous for standardising the colour grading of diamonds. The following year Keith studied colour gemstones, passing the examination in 1982.The Diamond Gallery concentrated on the diamond market building up a large following of customers seeking more personal and informed service after trading at the same location for thirty years. "The Diamond Gallery" was forced to re-locate when the building was sold and re-developed.
