Horticulturalist Arthur Dean and his family came to Halifax from England prior to 1919, and founded Dean{s Nursery soon after. The Nursery consisted of a retail shop and a glassed-in greenhouse that spanned a whole city block on Stanley Street in the North-end of Halifax, where the current Dean{s Flowers now stands. From the beginning, it was a thriving business in which Arthur Dean{s whole family played a part in growing the flowers they cut and sold. For decades, Dean{s Nursery was Halifax{s premiere florist, whose work was the talk of the town at weddings and events, and was always a hit adorning cars and floats at the annual Natal Day parades. With the evolution of transportation, the Dean Family changed the focus from growing their own flowers to importing them from exotic ports, and Dean{s Flowers continued to be Halifax{s first choice for flowers. In 1989, they finally retired and sold Dean{s Flowers to new owners, whose vision for the flower shop expanded the business to include as many as fourteen retail shops throughout metro Halifax. Unfortunately this expansion was poorly timed, with an economic recession that took hold in the early {90{s and put businesses such as Dean{s, that catered to disposable income, into extreme jeopardy. Enter Lois and Rex Burton, who took over operation of Dean{s Flowers in 1994, and concentrated their efforts to the original location on Stanley Street. Through their diligence and tremendous effort, Dean{s Flowers is back on top as the "most recognized name in Halifax{s floral scene."
