North Shore Centres of Mutual Aid (CMA) was first introduced to the North Shore in 1966, but it all began in Auckland in early 1959 when a group of people formed the Civilian Maimed Association. They wanted day centres where active able-bodied people could join along with the less active with medical problems. The first centre in 1961 was in Ponsonby but by 1966 there were centres in Parnell, Mt Eden, Avondale and Takapuna. Expansion over the bridge saw five more centres opened by 1969 and the North Shore becoming a branch, responsible for its own organization and funds in 1971. Current Information C.M.A. now stands for Centres of Mutual Aid. North Shore CMA Incorporated is a multi-cultural, non-sectarian, not-for-profit, charitable organisation that offers social contact; companionship; crafts; games and other activities including outings and entertainment .
