Messrs Tommy Bartley and John Ward founded Bartley & Ward in 1899. They took over a building firm run by the Gates family since 1855, and by the early 1900{s plumbing, house decorating and funeral work were also carrid out. They operated from premises at Cross Keys and Three Bridges Road. Hall, Beddel & Co. took over the business in 1930 providing joinery contracts in London and in 1957 the business moved to 58 Haslett Avenue West. In 1969 the business once more changed hands, resulting in the closure of all but the funeral business. Once more, Bartley & Ward became family owned and moved to its current site at 10 Haslett Avenue West, Crawley, a former school and tea house.
