My earliest interest in photography began during my high school years. After a preliminary pursuit of drawing and painting, I started taking photographs of football games and plays put on by the drama department. My photography teacher asked me to be his student assistant during my senior year. He subsequently recommended me to photograph my first paying job in documenting a carburetor built by an automotive shop teacher for his college final project. While in attendance at Long Beach City College, I worked 2 years at North American Aviation in Downey, California. During this time, N.A.A. was involved in the effort to secure the Apollo spacecraft contract. Some of my responsibilities included, producing images for newsletter publication, production reports, and manufacturing time-line presentations. My duty to service was calling, so I left N.A.A. to enter into the Navy.
