In the early 1800’s, Quarry Vineyard was part of the large Spanish land grant ranch know as Rancho Caymus. After 1848, and California’s inclusion into the United States, Rancho Caymus was divided into smaller sections for homesteading. In 1873, the homesteaders arrived at Quarry Vineyards and began to farm the land. In 1881 Charles Scheggia and two partners purchased the ranch and begun what has become over 125 years of grape growing and wine making at Quarry Vineyards. During the 40 years of Scheggia stewardship, terraces were carved from the rocky and challenging hillsides, vineyards were planted to Zinfandel, and rock was quarried to build a winery. Scheggia sold the property in 1920 to Emil Werle for $10.00 and a handshake (and forgiveness of a bar tab, so we have been told). For the next 72 years the Werle family produced a field blend of primarily Zinfandel. Also, they reopened the historic stone quarry, planted Walnut orchards and eventually opened a Christmas Tree farm.
