That dream has since grown to encompass the shared vision and commitment of 15 dedicated employees. Dona Taylor and Bill Hoover moved to San Francisco in January of 1989 with a newborn baby and a few pennies in their collective cookie jar. The couple had plans for those pennies—Bill, a career in television advertising and Dona, to establish her first line of fashion jewelry. After the Loma Prieta earthquake hit and the economy crashed, it was Dona’s dream the couple decided to pursue. A computer and printer on the bedside table became her office and a piece of 4x8 plywood became her workbench. She tended to design and production, while Bill became head of business and sales development for his wife’s fledgling company. Within a year, Ornaments by Dona was born, followed by the first Gallery of Jewels location.Bill and Dona conceived Gallery of Jewels as a place to showcase Ornaments by Dona and the jewelry of five of Dona’s designer friends. What began as a small operation in 1990 has since expanded into three unique galleries showcasing the work of over 100 talented artists. Though the scale of the concept along with the number of staff has grown, the Gallery of Jewels mission has remained the same since its inception: build a strong artistic community, support those artists to the fullest, and bring quality jewelry to our clientele.
