Semi precious diamonds (Synthetic diamonds) are not fakes; they are man made diamonds formed in laboratory. Natural diamonds on the other hand, are created by nature and mined from the ground. Synthetic diamond has essentially the same composition as its natural counterpart, and its physical and optical properties are almost the same.Synthetic Diamonds (Semi Precious Diamonds) date back to the early 1950,s when the General Electric Corporation (GE) started producing tiny diamonds that were used as industrial abrasives. In 1970, GE announced the creation of cuttable, gem-quality diamonds. Later, other companies in South Africa, Russia, Japan and United States started producing synthetic diamonds, many of which has been used industrially for for precision cutting tools, miniature spacecraft windows, and heat sinks in electronic equipment. More often than not the diamonds are yellow to brownish yellow in color.Only limited quantities of loose synthetic diamonds were sold until 2003. However, in 2004, lab-grown diamonds became more widely available to the public at jewellery stores and over the internet. They come in a variety of colors -Yellow, blue, red, orangy yellow, greenish yellow - some of which are the result of treatment processes. They may also be colorless and near colorless.
