The summer and harvest of 2013 have come and gone, My Oh My! A combination of drought conditions, early fruit set and a warm growing season resulted in an early start and then end to the harvest of 2013. Here at Kenneth Volk Vineyards, we brought in the first load of fruit – Verdelho from Pomar Junction Vineyard –on August 23rd, and wrapped up with Chardonnay from the Steiner Creek Vineyard on the cool San Simeon Coast on October 18th. Honestly, the only vintage I can compare this to is 1997, when here on the Central Coast, we harvested very high quality fruit very early on in the harvest season. While there’s a lot of banter about the quality of 2012, particularly in comparison to the challenges of the 2010 and 2011 vintages, I’m convinced that 2013 is even better…especially for late-ripening varietals. This vintage is the real deal. We achieved full physiological ripeness on nearly every variety. I’m ecstatic about the wine quality.New stars coming down the pike this vintage…Melon de Bourgogne from neighboring Bien Nacido Vineyard, and Malbec from the Pinnacles region of San Benito County.
