Cervical cancer prevention, symptoms and treatment
Cervical cancer affects the lower part of the uterus (cervix). Cervix connects the upper part of the vagina and the uterus. Cervical cancer is caused by the infection of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
Cervical cancer prevention
Cervical cancer can be fully prevented by getting the HPV vaccination. The prevention of cancer can be classified into primary and secondary. Primary prevention involves preventing before the cancer occurs. Secondary prevention involves finding the cancer cells early and providing proper treatment to prevent it from progressing.
HPV vaccination comes under primary prevention. Screening modalities come under secondary prevention. If you notice any symptoms and visit a gastroenterologist or cancer specialist, they would recommend a PAP smear test.
A PAP smear test will check for abnormal cells or inflammation in the cervix. HPV test involves detecting the HPV infection through HPV-infected cells. These two tests come under secondary prevention. HPV vaccine can be given to girls from the age of 9 years. Young women when vaccinated will develop antibodies against the virus.
