Cervical cancer affects the lower part of the uterus which is called the cervix. Cervical cancer is caused by the infection of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Hence this cancer is fully preventable with HPV vaccination.

There are two types of prevention for any disease. Primary prevention involves finding the problem before it happens and avoiding it. Secondary prevention involves early diagnosis and immediate treatment.

HPV Vaccination comes under primary prevention and it is given to young girls. This will help their bodies develop antibodies against the infection. Secondary prevention involves screening modalities like Pap smear tests and HPV tests.

A pap smear test will detect abnormal tumour-like cells in the cervix. HPV test will help detect HPV-infected cells and the infection.

Do all HPV infections turn into cervical cancer?

90% of the cervical infections in healthy individuals are self-limited and the infection is clear out by itself. But for some women, the HPV infection will turn into cervical cancer.

The HPV vaccination can be given to women from the age of 9. When you reach the age of 30, it is best to screen yourself for the infection regularly. You can consult with your gynaecologist or gynaecological surgeon to know about the screening.
