Discover the Abundance of Superfoods in the Mediterranean Diet
The term superfood is an overused one. Not only is there no specific definition of what a superfood is, but some nutritionists also express doubt as to whether even using the word is a good idea as they fear it may cause people to focus on only a few types of food and forget that a rounded diet is key to good health. Still, some foods are good for you and promote good physical health, so it's safe to call these superfoods. Accepting that superfoods are foods that are good for us, no cuisine has more of them than Mediterranean food. Here is what they are and why they should be a part of your regular diet.
Fish
Fish is a good source of protein and contains large quantities of healthy fats like omega-3 which lower blood pressure and protect the heart. To maximize the health benefits, avoid fried fish and instead, grill, bake or broil it. The Mediterranean style that uses lots of vegetables, lemon and olive oil ensures that the taste of the fish will be exceptional.
Veggies
There is a reason why nutritionists recommend eating lots of vegetables. Not only are they low in fat, but they also contain many important vitamins like A and C and various nutrients like folic acid and potassium. The Mediterranean diet has many ways of using vegetables in salads (sautéing, roasting and grilling) all of which add to the flavor and ensure that the nutritional value is not lost.

Fruits
Everyone likes fruits, but hesitate to consume more than small amounts because they contain natural sugars and sugar is something they want to avoid. The natural sugars found in fruits are not the same as the processed sugars added to food to make it sweeter. Because they are in the fiber of the fruits, they are absorbed more slowly by the body, so there is almost no negative impact. In addition, they contain vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. Because they contain lots of fiber, they are filling and this prevents us from eating too much of less healthy foods. Mediterranean cuisine has many amazing ways to prepare and serve fruits.
Whole Grains
We all know that highly processed and refined flours and rice have negative effects on health. However, that does not mean that all grains are bad. Whole grains like whole wheat, barley, brown rice, quinoa, millet, oats, etc. are good for you and can form the bases of incredibly delicious Mediterranean meals.
Olive Oil
Oil is an essential part of almost all forms of cooking. However, while many types of oil are unhealthy, there is one that is good for you because it is full of monounsaturated fatty acids that are good for the heart and help to control blood pressure - that is olive oil.
