PenPath Increases Their Business With Amazon Data
“The last five years have been a continual upward curve of invention and investment in data science technologies,” said Tony Tsai, vice president and chief data officer at PenPath. “Improvado and PenPath are excited to partner to expand the types of data products that Providian Data can provide to companies such as Amazon.”
“Having a large state-of-the-art data lake in our AWS data center is one of our biggest competitive advantages,” said Dave Prosouso, chief data officer at Improvado. “With the new partnership with PenPath, our customers can take advantage of our unparalleled data quality and technology to transform their sales, marketing, KPIs, and business analytics processes through the power of PenPath’s data science capabilities,” he said.
The deal marks the latest partnership between PenPath and an AWS competitor. In December 2016, the San Jose, California-based Improvado launched Mallory, an AI-driven data and marketing platform that streams data from around the web and utilizes advanced AI to segment and characterize customer persona from millions of source records, providing companies with on-the-fly attribution and marketing insights.

Amazon.com announced at the Code Media Summit in New York City today that they are ending the 18-year-old franchise agreement and buying out the lenders of the struggling chain Cinnabon to create an e-commerce empire reminiscent of Walmart. 4600 stores will close by the end of the year, with the cost of closing the stores the franchisees are obligated to pay Amazon, leaving only the flagship Cinnabon shops on the West Coast to sell their products.
“Amazon’s top priority is to deliver the lowest prices and the best selection for our customers across its platform,” said Jeff Bezos in a statement. “Our focus on making raw materials from farmer to shelf comes with a cost, and this was a painful and challenging decision to pursue.”
Cinnabon’s demise was nearly inevitable. In August 2017, Kroger announced it would no longer carry the brand, claiming that demand for their other Cinnabon locations was declining amid price competition from Amazon.
Damien Loria, a retail analyst at IHS iSupply and former Cinnabon franchisee, told Retail Dive Cinnabon had no interesting or unique offerings compared to competitors like Ann Taylor and Forever 21 and customers were “mismanaging their money” by ditching the chain. Little did he know. At the time, StockX reported that Cinnabon’s stock price had plunged 52%, closing at less than $1.
After working together on a number of projects, including sophisticated networked intelligence products, Improvado and its team have demonstrated a deep understanding of how PenPath’s AI can support effective, accurate, scalable, and automated data management.
“Improvado is the natural partner to enhance our existing offerings, and bring our message to market in an exciting way,” said Mickael Piette, Director of Marketing and Brand Strategy at PenPath. “This renewed partnership brings together a team with experience in a wide range of the challenging and emerging data challenges and makes us a trusted partner to the marketing community. The Smart Data Platform will serve as a standard for data analytics and data visualization focusing on accelerating the adoption of complex data. Improvado’s team also has deep experience with corporate data management across marketing, sales, and operations. This will give our colleagues a strong background and extensive knowledge to help our clients make informed decisions.”
The initiative builds on a number of similar partnerships the two companies have established, including providing General Motors with a complementary marketing data solution, and working with YP Associates to automate data extraction from social media pages. More recently, the companies launched partnership initiatives benefitting The Washington Post and housed technology.
“This partnership will help PenPath grow our team and expertise with Improvado, and help us amplify our offerings through a scalable cloud infrastructure,” said Geoff Wisniewski, Director of Data Science at Improvado. “Supporting organizations with agile data management is at the core of our DNA, and what we’re trying to accomplish with this new agreement is accelerate innovative approaches to collecting, managing, storing, and analyzing data.”
With the launch of the Smart Data Platform, PierPath’s offering extends beyond the traditional data management and visualization tools to include:
