St. Louis, Missouri, is a city located along the Mississippi River in the middle of the state, within the U.S. state of Missouri. It is an independent city and county as well as the central city of the St. Louis metropolitan area, which spans roughly 350 miles (560 km) southeast of Chicago, Illinois to St. Louis, Missouri.The city of St. Louis was founded by French colonists after the Seven Years' War. It was a trading post on the Mississippi River and a major stop on the westward expansion of the American fur trade. In 1803, after being purchased from France, it became part of the United States.With its connection to the Great Lakes, the Ohio River, the Mississippi River, and the Missouri River, St. Louis was ideally positioned to become a major hub of commerce. In the 1840s, it became a destination for massive population growth from Ireland and Germany.The history of St. Louis, Missouri is a long and exciting one, beginning over 300 years ago. Settlers first moved into the area around what is today downtown in 1679. Then followed French explorers in the 17th century who made their homes around the city of St. Louis.
