Tips to Keep Your Child Healthy During the Winter
General Winter Health Tips for All Children
Children love winter as it means it’s almost time for the holidays - Christmas, Santa Claus and gifts are all looked forward to with a lot of excitement. But the cold season is when children are most susceptible to illnesses like seasonal flu, common cold, stomach flu, ear infections and bronchiolitis.
It isn’t possible to keep your kids warm and safe at home all the time. They have to attend a school or go to their child care providers. Here are some tips to ensure that your child is protected at all times during this cold season.
Add Another Layer
Multiple layers of clothing is better than wearing one thick jacket or sweater. This can also help when they are at their daycare provider because it is easy for the teacher to take off a couple of layers when the child is inside and add them on when she goes out.
A Colorful Snack Box
Add colorful seasonal vegetables and fruits to your child’s snack box. They are rich in nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C, minerals, and proteins. A couple of nuts in the box ensure that they get omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. This will help boost immunity and will protect your child from illnesses like flu or cold.

Get the Flu Shot
Make sure that your child has had her flu shot. Most child care providers will insist on it. It is wise to follow their advice as the flu virus can cause influenza which is a contagious respiratory illness that can get quite serious.
Give Special Instructions
If your child is very sensitive in the winter months, you can ask the daycare provider to take special care which could include:
- Making sure that your child is wearing a mask if another child is sick
- Keeping the child indoors during playtime
- Ensuring your child takes medication when needed
