Understanding Disc Collapse
A collapsed disc is a common spine condition, with about 10 million cases per year only in India. It should be medically diagnosed and treated, and thus if you notice any discomfort or symptoms, it is important to consult an orthopedician.
What is a collapsed disc?
The disc is a jelly-like substance, and it acts as a natural shock absorber in the spine. It is held together with a mesh-like structure with a high water content like any other part of our body. With age, the disc's water content decreases, which results in the wear and tear of the disc. This makes the patient experience a lot of pain.
This is common among people between 40 to 50, but the condition is accelerated in some people. This can lead to a tear in the mesh and then disc collapse.
Treatment for disc collapse
As we mentioned before, disc collapse is common, and thus not all disc collapses are serious. If there is no discomfort, leg pain, or leg numbness, disc collapse can be maintained conservatively using medications and physiotherapy.
But if the disc collapse is severe, the disc compresses the nerves and causes numbness and weakness in the legs. In extreme cases, it may even lead to changes in the walking pattern, requiring surgery.
A simple procedure called keyhole surgery is performed by orthopaedic surgeons, by which they take care of the part that compresses the nerve. After the surgery, the patient will experience 90% relief from the pain immediately.
