What are the Different Stages of Cancer?
There are 4 stages in which cancer progresses.
Stage I – very early cancer
Stage II – Slightly advanced cancer but still confined to the site
Stage III – The cancer has spread from the organ to the regional lymph nodes
Stage IV – Disseminated cancer ( it has spread widely through the body’s other organs)
Why the classification is done?
Classification of the stages of the cancer help select the right treatment and also determine the prognosis of the treatment.
There is a classification called TNM (Tumour Node Metastasis). This is a common cancer staging technique that is the same throughout the world.
According to TNM, the stages of the cancer are coded according to the size of the primary tumour. If the tumour is small and confined to one area then it is T1 but if it has spread to other organs, then it is classified as T4.

Then according to the spreading of cancer to the lymph nodes, the cancer is classified as N0, N1, N2, and N3. And then according to Metastasis, the classification is M0 or M1.
Now according to TNM classification, T1N0M0 refers to primary disease confined to the particular organ and T3N2M1 means the cancer has already spread to other places.
