When Is Full Toenail Removal Recommended for Foot Health?
What Is Full Toenail Removal?
Full toenail removal, or toenail avulsion, is a surgical procedure in which the entire toenail is removed from the nail bed.
Reasons for Full Toenail Removal
Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail is a condition in which the skin grows over the toenail from one or both sides or the nail grows into the skin. If the toenail has grown deep into the skin and is causing significant pain, infection or repeated episodes of swelling and inflammation, toenail removal may be recommended. This procedure can help alleviate pain and prevent further complications.

Fungal Nail Infections
Fungal infections, also known as mycosis, are ailments caused by a fungus. Fungal infections commonly affect the skin and nails. Sometimes, the nail may get so severely infected with a fungus that it cannot be effectively treated with topical or oral medications. When this kind of infection occurs in the toenail, toenail removal may be recommended to remove the infected nail and prevent further spread of the infection.
Trauma
Our feet are constantly being subjected to trauma even on a normal day-to-day basis. Sometimes, trauma like a sports injury or accident, or even accidentally stubbing the toe against a hard object may cause injury, bruising, inflammation and pain. Part of the toenail may blacken or break away due to the trauma. Full toenail removal may be necessary to promote healing and prevent infection.

Chronic Nail Conditions
Some people, genetically or due to reasons like medical conditions, certain medicines, their lifestyle or sports may be prone to nail conditions such as thickened or deformed nails that cause pain, discomfort or embarrassment. In some cases, toenail removal may be recommended as a treatment option.
If one suffers from any of the above foot conditions, consulting a podiatrist is important. The podiatrist will examine the feet and consider the extent of damage before deciding on a treatment plan. Most of the time, a toenail doctor will consider full toenail removal as a last option and will attempt to treat the condition in more conservative ways first.
